Shazam Your iPhone

If you are a big music lover, check out Shazam. It has the potential to revolutionize how people discover and buy music. The idea behind Shazam is quite simple. Whenever you hear a song playing and can't identify it—at home or a bar, at a friend's house, on the car radio—you activate the Shazam application on your iPhone. It "listens" to the song for about 30 seconds, then sends a text message to your phone identifying the artist and title. Shazam's has a database that contains audio fingerprints for nearly 5 million songs. Therefore, the odds of a positive ID is quite good. You can download Shazam onto your iPhone for free from the App Store. Beside being an industry standard, Shazam fully integrates with and complements the iPhone's native environment, allowing you to seamlessly discover, buy and share tunes simply by holding your iPhone to music for just a few seconds.

Kindle 2 Set for Release

It has been rumored that Amazon’s Kindle 2 will go on sale 'early next quarter.' Based on rumors, it is slightly longer and not as thick as the original Kindle. Some of the button–related problems and bugs (such as pages turning on their own accord) have been fixed. The buttons and user interface definitely needed an overhaul -- and we hope that Amazon will add an audio reader for vision-impaired users or those who like audio books. Also scheduled for the first half of 2009 is a larger-screen student version. If you are not willing to wait, check out the Sony's PRS-700 Digital Reader. It's an interesting competitor to the Kindle. And for iPhone users, you must check out eReader.

Go Wii with Wii Music

If Guitar Hero or Rock Band are too complex for your musical taste, Wii Music might be your cup of tea. This music video game for the Wii that simulates playing musical instruments using the Wii Remote and the Wii Balance Board. The game is part of Nintendo's Wii Series and Touch! Generations series of games. The Wii Music player starts by using both motions and button presses on the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to control a six-member Mii band. Unlike other music games, Wii Music does not require the player to press certain buttons at certain times but only requires the player to move the Wii Remote and Nunchuk like they were playing the instruments. Positives * Easy to learn. * Great for beginners. * All you need is at least one full Wii remote and nunchuck set. Negatives * Limited music selection from public domain. * Few popular music choices. * Brass and string instruments sound average at best. The Bottom Line Wii Music is a good starter kit before going toward the other “expensive” music games. The base retail price is about $50.

Encrypted USB Drives for the Mac

Lost USB drives with sensitive data are becoming a significant problem. The popular solution is using USB thumb drives with native encryption. While these drives are available for the PC (i.e, IronKey, etc.), there were no viable USB-drive for the Mac armed with native crypto. Now Mac users can feel more at ease -- and more secure. SanDisk just announced a secure USB flash drive that supports OS X. The SanDisk Cruzer Enterprise is available in 1-, 2-, 4-, and 8-gigabyte sizes, and works with OS X 10.4 and 10.5. It has hardware-based 256-bit AES encryption. Cruzer Enterprise in Mac OS X and Windows PC environments possesses the same features and data security - even if used in both environments. The device can be initialized from either a Macintosh or Windows computer, where users can: * Log in and shut down access to the encrypted storage area * Change and manage passwords * Change contact information, language and other preferences * Launch online support, view current firmware and drive information Regardless of the mixed OS environment, security admins can manage the security of their flash drives with ease.

Packing a Punch: Wii Everlast Boxing Gloves

You're feeling a little frisky today, a little Tyson... and you want a Wii accessory that gives you a better boxing experience, check out the Wii Everlast Boxing Gloves. Everlast Worldwide and Company X Accessories created these $30 gloves for the purpose of a better virtual-boxing experience. These 3.8-ounce gloves are made from synthetic leather, with straps for the Wii remote in range of the Wii’s sensor. An opening for your fingers makes pushing buttons fairly easy but you'll have to get accustomed to the sensors. Once you've got the gloves mastered, you'll truly have a sense of being in the ring. Depending on the game and the competition, you should get a good workout. And you'll get the satisfaction of beating the hell out of an opponent without bruising your own pretty face in the real world.

SlotMusic Player: A Perfect Stocking Stuffer

You're down to your last $50 -- and you need to buy your favorite geek something cool while making sure you have some leftover cash to fill their freezer with hotpockets, their office drawers with ramen, and their fridge with Jolt Cola. Try the SanDisk SlotMusic Player -- weighing in at a very frugal $20. Albums available on MicroSD cards  cost about as much as a CD ($15). This player costs little and IS little -- it fits into the palm of your hand, and has basic controls like the iPod shuffle, such as play, skip backward/forward, volume up/down. Positives The SlotMusic Player is inexpensive, palm portable and easy to use. The exterior is customizable via removable shells. No PC required. Negatives No display, no internal memory and no features beyond very basic music playback. There are a limited number of albums. MicroSD cards are quite tiny and easy to misplace. The Bottom Line: This palm-sized MP3 player stores about 1GB of music and includes a pair of earphones. Music playback is  impressive and it's a great alternative to the iPod Shuffle. It earns a 3.5 stars out of 5 stars.
