Your Mobile Phone… in Stereo!

For those who store tons of music in their mobile phone and want tons of sound, Logitech's Pure-Fi Mobile speakers may be your savior. Besides operating as a Bluetooth-enabled speakerphone, you can use it as a portable boom box. These speakers stream music in stereo from phones and other gadgets equipped with the stereo Bluetooth A2DP technology. The rechargeable battery lasts about 12 hours. The auxiliary and USB connections bring big sound to a computer or portable music player. The Pure-Fi Mobile speaker comes with 5.1-cm passive and active drivers to enhance sound quality, and one-touch controls so you can answer or end calls easily. It is also equipped with a microphone that picks up vocal nuances and blocks unwanted background noise. The Pure-Fi Mobile also has USB connectivity and is supplied with a travel case. Positives * Having the capability to play your music with no wires attached * Plays the large and small sound very well * It is great for road warriors who want good music on the go The Bottom Line This multipurpose, portable Bluetooth speaker system gives your mobile phone an impressive audio boost. Reports tell me that you can get these great speakers ...

The Return of the Satellite Phone: 9555 Iridium

They're baaa-aack. Satellite phones -- once the size and weight of cinderblock -- are making a comeback. With the look and feel of a more conventional mobile phone, the Iridium 9555 operates virtually anywhere in the world. Launched in October, it is 30 percent smaller than its predecessor, the 9505A handset. It also has a brighter, larger screen (200 characters ), and it is ergonomically comfortable. The 9555 has a mini-USB data port, an internally retractable antenna, an integrated speakerphone, and an intuitive UI. Overall, the Iridium 9555 has been engineered to withstand and perform well in the world's most rugged and remote environments, and benefits from total global coverage including the poles. The price of a Iridium Phone is about $800 and can be rented for about $30 per week.

Kindle 2 Set for Release

It has been rumored that Amazon’s Kindle 2 will go on sale 'early next quarter.' Based on rumors, it is slightly longer and not as thick as the original Kindle. Some of the button–related problems and bugs (such as pages turning on their own accord) have been fixed. The buttons and user interface definitely needed an overhaul -- and we hope that Amazon will add an audio reader for vision-impaired users or those who like audio books. Also scheduled for the first half of 2009 is a larger-screen student version. If you are not willing to wait, check out the Sony's PRS-700 Digital Reader. It's an interesting competitor to the Kindle. And for iPhone users, you must check out eReader.

Packing a Punch: Wii Everlast Boxing Gloves

You're feeling a little frisky today, a little Tyson... and you want a Wii accessory that gives you a better boxing experience, check out the Wii Everlast Boxing Gloves. Everlast Worldwide and Company X Accessories created these $30 gloves for the purpose of a better virtual-boxing experience. These 3.8-ounce gloves are made from synthetic leather, with straps for the Wii remote in range of the Wii’s sensor. An opening for your fingers makes pushing buttons fairly easy but you'll have to get accustomed to the sensors. Once you've got the gloves mastered, you'll truly have a sense of being in the ring. Depending on the game and the competition, you should get a good workout. And you'll get the satisfaction of beating the hell out of an opponent without bruising your own pretty face in the real world.

SlotMusic Player: A Perfect Stocking Stuffer

You're down to your last $50 -- and you need to buy your favorite geek something cool while making sure you have some leftover cash to fill their freezer with hotpockets, their office drawers with ramen, and their fridge with Jolt Cola. Try the SanDisk SlotMusic Player -- weighing in at a very frugal $20. Albums available on MicroSD cards  cost about as much as a CD ($15). This player costs little and IS little -- it fits into the palm of your hand, and has basic controls like the iPod shuffle, such as play, skip backward/forward, volume up/down. Positives The SlotMusic Player is inexpensive, palm portable and easy to use. The exterior is customizable via removable shells. No PC required. Negatives No display, no internal memory and no features beyond very basic music playback. There are a limited number of albums. MicroSD cards are quite tiny and easy to misplace. The Bottom Line: This palm-sized MP3 player stores about 1GB of music and includes a pair of earphones. Music playback is  impressive and it's a great alternative to the iPod Shuffle. It earns a 3.5 stars out of 5 stars.

A Starter Camera for Kids

For your active kids who want to learn how to shoot pictures, consider  Argus’ Bean and Bean Sprout line of clip-on digital cameras. This camera features a sleek design and simple operation and has a hard plastic casing that is kid friendly. It can be added to a key ring, or clipped to a backpack, purse or belt loop for immediate use. The Bean is offered in two variations: a 3.2- and 5-megapixel model. Both come standard with a 1.5-inch LCD display, 16MB SDRAM and lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Additional accessories include user guide, video cable, Arcsoft PhotoImpression software and driver installation CD. Both Bean models use standard SD memory cards. The Sprout is designed to offer the same durability as the Bean but in a smaller size for younger picture- takers. It comes in a selection of colors, and is equipped with 8MB SDRAM and lithium-ion rechargeable battery. USB-compatible, the Sprout also includes user guide, video cable, USB cable, Arcsoft PhotoImpression and driver installation CD. The lowest price I found for this camera online was $50.00 as of publication.

Sony Challenges the Kindle with Its e-Reader

The eBook reader is a device for those trying to slim down the size of their library, save a few trees, and be able to take tons of books with you when you're on the go. The PRS 505 is easy to use and has eight levels of gray scale that provides crisp and clear text, images, and graphics. This reader has the capacity to store up to 160 typical eBooks with expansion slots for Memory Stick Duo media or SD memory cards and a USB slot to make the device's library practically limitless. It also has an auto-sync feature that lets users set up folders with books and documents that can be automatically synchronized when the device is connected to a PC. Positives * Supports most formats without any conversion. The included software makes it easy to add books to either the main memory or one of the memory cards - simply drag and drop. * The screen displays clear text that is readable under the brightest of lights. It's quite easy on the eyes. * Supports MP3 playback while you are reading. * It's lightweight and doesn't put a strain on the body. * It has the capacity to store multiple bookmarks to keep your place ...

Best Value Bluetooth Headset

With recent economic indicators all pointing south, we thought we'd focus on items that give the electronic consumer more bang for the buck. Today, we're taking a look at the Plantronics Voyager 520, a Bluetooth headset that works well in general and can tackle noisy places. The All-in-One Easy Button enables you to place calls, answer calls, and adjust the volume all -- as you might guess -- with one convenient button. Its multipoint technology allows you to stay connected with two Bluetooth mobile phones Its QuickPair technology lets you easily pair the headset with your Bluetooth mobile phone Good battery support. You can get up to 8 hours of talk time and 180 hours of standby time from a single charge Technology: Bluetooth 2.0, supporting devices with headset and hands-free profiles Range: Up to 33 feet (10 meters) Controls: Volume, call answer/end, last number redial, voice-activated dialing (requires compatible handset) Positives: * Good sound quality * Comfortable for the ear Negatives: * Adequate Noise Canceling feature needs to be better but is decent for the price. The Bottom Line: This headset is the best value for the user who needs basic Bluetooth usage.

A Wireless Router for the Serious Office

If you are operating a small business from your home or office and use a great deal of wireless gear, check out the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router. Expert reviews tell me that the D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router is at or near the top on most performance tests and it excels in mixed networks. The tests point out that this router delivers up to 14x faster speeds* and 6x farther range* than 802.11g This router is also backward compatible with the 802.11g standard. What I like about this router is that it can be used for streaming HD video or streaming multiple applications simultaneously and doesn’t conflict with other wireless devices. This device also has dual active firewall protection (SPI & NAT) that prevents malicious attacks on networks from the Internet. The only negative point about this router is that the USB ports don't support storage or print sharing. Overall, it is slightly expensive compared to other routers. But you want the best overall wireless router. You need to pay for it.

Look Mom, a Perfect Can Opener!

A can opener in a tech blog? Yes, this one grabbed our attention. If you are looking for an electric can opener that does a perfect job in cutting the lid along the side of the can under the beaded lip, this Hamilton Beach model is the one. The design of the Hamilton Beach 76606 Pop-Top Electric Can Opener enables one to cut lids that have pull ring tabs and does not leave any metal shavings. When operating it, wedge the can between the two rotating discs. Push vertically down on the lever to grip the can. Assert the lever with a little more force to rotate and cut the can. Hold the lever down throughout the operation for less than 10 seconds, is well worth the outcome of an open can. Once it is opened, the device does not automatically shut off. A quite minor glitch. Other than that, the process is smooth and quiet, no absurd quirks. Another plus for this can opener is that its leaves the lid and the can with no sharp edges. The bottom line is your fingers are saved. The measures for this gadget are approximately 5 by 4 by 9 inches. It also ...
